by phone. >>> gangs and guns, a deadly mix in chicago that's getting more dire by the day. the city marked a grim milestone this week, 500 murders so far this year. it was a shooting on the city's west side thursday that pushed the number to 500. police say a 40-year-old man was shot in the head outside a convenience store. another troubling number, 270, that's the number of children who have been killed by guns in chicago in the last five years. back to this year's 500 homicides. that's up 50% from last year. it is the highest the murder rate has been in the city since 2008. it was 512 then. what's going on here? some say it's a police problem, that chicago police are simply outnumbered and outgunned. unable to handle the influx of kids who want to kill kids to make some cash or to climb the social ladder in chicago gang life. or is it a gun problem? the city has some of the toughest laws on the books. but the chicago police department says 87% of the homicides this year are a result of gun violence. so let's talk. joining me tonight for this conversation, tio hardiman. and harold pollack

, a christmas surprise no one wished for. a tornado caught on video as it touched down right this city center. emergency management officials say the twister left lots of damage in its wake blowing out first and second floor windows at the mobile infirmary medical center and the roof at the high school. so far no injuries or death, but wit trees and power lines down tens of thousands are without electricity. one store sent customers scrambling for cover. >> one customer looked out the window and said there's actually a tornado coming. i looked out and you could see the sparks flying and debris flying around. i got everybody together, about seven customers. everybody huddle around we need to go to the back. >> i probably hurt my baby grabbing her and huddling for protection. there was no time. >> reporter: it was a massive storm system that stretched across the nation. earlier a tornado touched down in mcneil, mississippi and several people suffered minor injuries. in texas, one near crockett decide to livestock feed store and high winds toppled trees killing a driver trying to remove another

[laughter] we do have differences. i am from kansas city which during my childhood was known in as the gateway to the west. he was from st. louis and the government builds the arch okhotsk and proclaimed themselves gateway to the west and we called them mound city. we think of st. louis as the exit to the east of. [laughter] there's similarities between t.s. eliot and me. we both use foreign languages in our poetry. he tends to use more sanskrit. actually don't know much of it. i was a kid who'd got dreamy during sanskrit class in kansas city, missouri. that shut down interstate 40 joust outside oklahoma city. texas got a double dose of bad weather, a 25-year-old man was killed near houston after a tree fell on his pickup. snow covered the ground in long view and turned dallas into a winter wonderland and blizzard warnings stretched from arkansas to pennsylvania. turning to mobile, alabama, windows were shattered and cars tossed off streets as this tornado touched down. >> oh my god, we need to go. it's right there. >> that's scary. several buildings damaged and several car accidents were blamed on the storm but no reports of serious injuries. emergency management officials tell cnn power has been restored to many customers, just over 7,000 in the dark, down from 23,000 last night. we head to mobile, christina leavenworth of w.e.a.r. in just about an hour weather officials will assess damage. christina, what are you hearing so far? >> reporter: good morning, carol. we are seeing a lot of damage here and it's widespread. the national weather service is saying the tornado touched down in five different locations, one of them here at murphy h

'll keep our fingers crossed. thank you, dillon. folks outside the upstate new york city of rochester are still in shock in morning after a twisted holiday tragedy that will left two firefighters dead and two others hospitalized christmas eve. chris pallone has this one. >> reporter: a sleepy vacation community northeast of rochester, new york, is in shock after a gunman lured firefighters to a neighborhood and shot them. investigators in webster, new york, say four firpths responded to reports of a house and car on fire around 5:30 monday morning. two in a fire truck, two others in their own cars. >> it appears that it was a trap, that there was a car and a house that were engulfed in flame. >> one of the men was able to retreat to safety after being s.w.a.t. a s.w.a.t. team in an armored vehicle retrieved the other three. toe tas kaczowka and mike chiapperini were dead. police evacuated at least 30 people from the area and seven homes were damaged or destroyed. the shooter was found shot dead near the scene. police say he killed himself identified as william spengler, a man with a l

in the middle of new york city when sandy hit, like for everyone, it was a different and strange time, but what i got to see was the resiliency and the will of the people of this area to stand up and love each other, to help each other, to rebuild -- this city is a great city. this area is strong. the system. it sure has. scranton at 26. below freezing in new york city at 31. just to let you know, it's not over yet. a brand new storm system set up these winter weather advisories for pennsylvania and into new york, washington, d.c., and the mountains of virginia. you can see also ohio slammed again after so much snow from the first system. so the way it's going to play out, saturday into sunday, this system is likely going to bring heavier snow to areas of northern pennsylvania in terms of snowfall totals. it's not going to be as big of a snowmaker or a blizzard maker from what we saw last time, but it will produce strong snowfall through central connecticut and rhode island. new england, you know winters can be long. winter is not officially -- is officially here, we are looking at a slamming start to the season. across the southeast, temperatures are also very cold. we have not warmed up in atlanta. we're at 31 degrees. the moisture coming into the south will come in at a time where temperatures are likely to be milder. we are not looking at snow accumulation in the south if that

a major snow event for the northeast i-95 cities. so we should be doing okay there. but still, nonetheless, snowy travel for many across the appalachians and northern new england. going back to wednesday, d.c., certainly impacted. pittsburgh, on back into cleveland, all these airports where we expect the snow, there will be severe weather in raleigh down to the south of this. but it's all go up to the north because the storm hasn't gotten into the thick of it yet. thursday, up into new england goes the meat of the storm. but backlash snow and wind. and on friday, we got the all go as we are now in a break between storms. but a break is the keyword there. but here comes the trough of low pressure sliding off to the great lakes and the rocky mountains. and that means a new storm will develop and impact these areas into saturday. a lot of people potentially heading back this weekend. more rain and snow. right now, it's too early to call from new york up to boston. rain or snow. but right now, d.c. looks like they're right on that rain/snow line. this one could be much more impactful for the n

on tonight, and right now though it's a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain through oklahoma city and dangerous thunderstorms with reports of pea-sized hail and you can see the lightning strikes popping up across dallas, texas into she haveport and all this energy sliding northeast. a lot of moisture coming up from the gulf that's just enhancing it. what does that mean for today? we don't have a tornado watch yet, but i anticipate we'll see one for this afternoon, especially for the areas highlighted in the brighter orange color. good risk for a moderate risk for the risk of tornadoes, hail and possible damaging winds. some of these winds could get up to 50 miles per hour or greater. if it's not enough where we have the lightning and thunder and rain we also have dense fog. make it any more dangerous to see if there e's debris blown apart. this is really tough this morning for those that are traveling. be very careful with the fog out there and snow building in later today and tonight. a real mess for this christmas. i hope everyone can stay inside as much as possible. >> lots for

. haywood, union city, about to move into san ramone. solano scattered rain to report for this part of the bay area. bulk of the activity in the southern third of the bay area. you can see development out to the west. the yellows and reds, indicating the increase in the rainfall rates san jose to sunnyvale. out toward campbell, blossoo m hill road. increase in the rainfall and the possibility of hail with some thunderstorms. keep that in mind at least in the short term. as far as temperatures, its cool. mainly in the 40s to around 50. santa rosa in 40. haywood 48 and san jose around 46 degrees. forecast for today, cool showers this morning, we will hold on to the chance of showers right on in to the afternoon with temperatures only maxing out in the low to mid50s. yesterday's storm, that cold front, today we have the speckled clouds off shore. that's a signature of cold unstable air and that will sweep in to the area for today. we will hold onto the sun, passing clouds and heavier downpours. here is the forecast model, 10:00 showing you scattered rain showers, it's doing a good job
